Across Media Contemporary Literature and Media Culture Conference to be held at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway, 5-7 May, 2011 CALL FOR PAPERS Deadline: 15 December, 2010
Contemporary cultural expression can perhaps more than ever before be characterized as transaesthetic phenomena. Western media culture, modern technology and the processes of globalization have caused an increase in the occurrence of transmedial and multimodal hybrids, the blending of public and private spheres, and have undermined the traditional academic boundaries between the arts. The relational, digital and performative nature of much contemporary literary expression poses theoretical and methodological challenges to the study of literature and calls for an increased dialogue between scholars affiliated with various academic fields.
Across Media: Contemporary Literature and Media Culture marks the culmination of a research project entitled Transcultural Aesthetics. Contemporary Literature and Media Culture. Affiliated with the Dept. of Scandinavian Studies and Comparative Literature (INL) at NTNU and sponsored by The Research Council of Norway and NTNU, this project was initiated with the aim of contributing insight into transmedial or trans-aesthetic literary phenomena and developing new analytic strategies. With this conference we seek to provide a forum for interdisciplinary and transaesthetic discussions that probe changes in contemporary aesthetic processes and literary expression. We welcome programmatic, theoretical, historiographical and methodological overviews and case studies that explore issues related to transmediality or transaesthetics. We invite the submission of abstracts related to the theme of the conference, but proposals may draw inspiration from the following areas (listed in random order): · Theoretical perspectives: adaptation, intermediality, remediation, multimodality · Contemporary literature and adaptation · Contemporary literature, performativity and performance · Contemporary literature and music · Contemporary literature and the image · Contemporary literature and digital media · Contemporary literature and media technology · Contemporary literature and literary historiography · Contemporary criticism and literary journalism · Media culture, the literary institution and author roles Keynote speakers (confirmed): W.J.T. Mitchell (University of Chicago), D.N. Rodowick (Harvard), James Lull (San Jose State University) and Ina Blom (University of Oslo).
